Welcome to Homegrown!

,

Welcome to our blog!! Don’t worry, we won’t bombard you with all of our deepest emotions – we’re just going to share some awesomeness with you! Everything from new trends in home décor to delicious recipes. My tribe and I are explorers that love trying new things, so if you’re in the need for a change – something new for supper, an update in a room, or some new clothing or jewelry – you’ll love this!

But first, I should probably tell you a bit about Homegrown! It’s pretty easy – everything in Homegrown is made in Alberta. I quickly realized that almost everything you need for your home can be bought by a local maker and decided to put it all under one roof.

Although I knew it would be tough, I did not fully appreciate how difficult it would be for people to even give you a chance.

While from the outside, it may appear that Homegrown got started quickly – that is far from the truth. The idea for Homegrown started over a year ago. After more than 9 months of researching, talking it over, and more researching, a business plan was drafted and I decided to go for it!

Although I knew it would be tough, I did not fully appreciate how difficult it would be for people to even give you a chance. But once I got that chance, I still took my time and made sure not to rush it. (It also slowed me down that I had an at-that-time 6-month-old).

From December to March, I went to meeting after meeting with potential vendors, bringing along my 6-month-old and occasionally my 2-year-old. On top of vendors, I dealt with the City for permits, Alberta Health and Safety, Moneris, Insurance companies, searched for displays, and on and on. I can pretty much sum it up by saying, it was a shitload of work.

Once we moved in, we dealt with paint splatter everywhere. There was paint on the floor, walls, doors, fixtures, and even the ceiling. My eye is still twitching just thinking about all of the paint and knowing that I still have a few more places that need a touch up.

I hope that you enjoy Homegrown as much as I will. Stop by, try some samples, check out our art and household goods – I guarantee, you will be blown away by what Alberta has to offer.
